Megatrax has always been at the forefront of creating innovative and highly useful sound effects for media production, and their latest release under the Megasonics label is no exception. Produced by top Hollywood sound designers and engineers, Megasonics is known for its expansive collection of sonic elements that push the boundaries of creativity while providing practicality for media professionals. In this post, we take an inside look at Megasonics 14, the latest album crafted by sound designer TJ Callaway, MPSE, focusing on household sound effects.

How It All Began: Conceiving the Project

TJ Callaway, MPSE, was approached by Megatrax to create a comprehensive household sound effects collection for Megasonics 14. The goal was to cover a wide range of everyday sounds, from doors opening to water running and kitchen appliances at work. “Ron reached out about creating a sound effects package of household sounds for Megatrax clients to use,” Callaway recalls. “He wanted a collection that could be versatile enough to serve multiple media formats—everything from TV commercials to films.”

The brief was clear: capture household sounds in a way that would make them highly usable yet distinct, giving media creators the flexibility they need for their projects.

The Recording Process: Capturing the Subtleties of Sound

For Megasonics 14, Callaway relied on his expertise to record high-fidelity sounds using top-notch gear. His setup included a Sanken CSS-5 shotgun mic and a Sound Devices Mix Pre recorder, chosen for their ability to provide a clean, directional sound. “These kinds of sounds needed a really clean signal path recorded on a great mic to reduce room acoustics,” he explains.

Capturing household sounds wasn’t always straightforward. Callaway often found himself working late into the night to avoid external noise interference. “The water sounds really benefitted from this,” he says, “especially when you hear water draining down a sink or bathtub drain.” Even subtle appliance hums, like those of refrigerators and ovens, were captured during these quiet hours, ensuring the purity of the recordings.

Media Applications: A Versatile Toolkit

Megasonics 14 offers an extensive array of household sounds that are versatile enough for various media applications. “I could imagine these sounds being used in everything from TV commercials to online content to films,” Callaway suggests. The practical yet detailed nature of these recordings makes them suitable for enhancing background realism or playing a pivotal role in sound-driven scenes.

Influences: From Ben Burtt to the Everyday Environment

As with much of his work, Callaway drew inspiration from legendary sound designer Ben Burtt, whose approach to capturing natural sounds in innovative ways greatly influenced this project. “Getting out of the studio and recording in the wild—even if that is a house—can often help you find sounds that you hadn’t previously thought to capture,” Callaway notes. The process of recording in real-world environments allowed him to add an organic, authentic feel to each sound in the collection.

A Journey in Sound Design: From Bands to Film and TV

Callaway’s passion for sound began during his high school years when he first stepped into a recording studio with his band. This early experience sparked an interest in the recording process and the technology behind it. After interning at a local studio and attending The Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences in Arizona, Callaway shifted his focus to Audio Post Production for film and TV. Over the years, he has held positions at commercial post houses and Reel FX Creative Studios in Dallas before moving into freelance sound design, where his career truly took off.

Notable Work and Future Projects

Throughout his career, Callaway has worked on an impressive range of projects across film, TV, and advertising. His portfolio includes animated features like The Book of Life and Free Birds, TV series such as No Activity, and documentaries like The Smell of Money. Recent projects include La Calesita, an animated short that continues to receive accolades on the festival circuit, and Crescendo, a documentary about the Van Cliburn Piano Competition. With each project, Callaway brings a level of creativity and technical expertise that shines through, and Megasonics 14 is no exception.

Megasonics 14, created by TJ Callaway, MPSE, is now available through Megatrax. This versatile collection of household sound effects is a must-have for media professionals looking to add depth and realism to their projects.
